Hi Tony, my father served in the Royal Engineers as a Clerk, was in Singapore in 1968 and Hong Kong in 1970...also in Germany (JHQ Rheindahlen) and Tidworth, Cove and many more. He was Paul Regan and also posted everywhere with him was George Small :)

DeleteHi Tony, I served with 56 Fld Sqn, part of 24 Fld Engr Regt RE at Tai Lam in the New Territories in Hong Kong.
ReplyDeleteSpent time in Korea with 'B' Troop 56 attached to the Royal Sussex Regiment at Kohima, refurbishing the camp ready for the yanks to take it over.
On returning to Hong Kong on the LST Frederick Clover, 24 returned to blighty in May'58 on the troopship Oxfordshire. I went down the road and joined 54 Ind Fld Sqn.
I returned to blighty in late '58 on the Oxfordshire, working in the radio room with Brian Faulkner. I was demobbed in 1960.

ReplyDeleteSorry I left reunion early. Its a shame the 54 turnout was bad after all the work you and Mick Fudge did to encourage people to go. Possibly we should have had it in the 70s or 80s and it would have maybe taken off. Still the venue was ideal and the meals ok. Take care and keep in touch.

My father, ultimately Major-General AHG Dobson was CO of 24 Field Engineer Regiment in Tai Lam 1953-1956. He retired as Chief Engineer BAOR in 1967 and died in 1987. He looked back on his time in Hong Kong as probably the most enjoyable part of his life.

ReplyDeleteTo bring some of the info up to date I was with 54HKfrom late Sept 1971 to mid March 1974.On the flight out with me were Jack Beacher,Big Al WAlker Johnny Dyer,Geordie Wakefield and a number of others names forgotten.Rodger Anstey was already there.All told there were 6 from 43 For Spt in Osnabruck travelled out together.I worked in the LAD Reme with Billy Wakelin.Couple of Reme lads I remember we're Tony Coleman and Gus Blower.saw these 2 in NI They were with 33 Sad.
